What attracted you to the 19six Internship?
The people. I chose 19six because everyone I met and spoke with when applying seemed like a great person to work with.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I get my inspiration from nature and music; they both make me feel refreshed. I feel that there is an innate connection between humans and nature/music that most people don’t experience often enough.

What is something you’re looking forward to in your future?
I’m looking forward to having the means to be able to invest in my hobbies more. I want to be able to get better hiking and camping gear, and better DJ equipment.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
I hope to one day do the structural design for a significant skyscraper.

What attracted you to the 19six internship?
Career fair enthusiasm, diversity of commercial projects, and overall, a high company reputation. I had a great time speaking to the “trio” at the career fair (they know who they are).

What led you to design?
In adolescence, I developed a fascination with new model construction homes. I would be in the back of the family SUV and roll down the windows to point out and yell “houses! houses!” I remember stepping off the school bus to go tour a new model home and after asking for a set of floorplans, the receptionist, per usual, would be confused as to why a child was trying to tour the property. On top of my obsession with Legos and Minecraft as a kid, I felt these three factors combined had drawn me to majoring in architecture, and now with only one year of school left, I feel I may have found my niche.

What aspect of design do you enjoy most?
The element of play is one of the most overlooked, but most important design aspects in my opinion due to its versatility and overall ability to transform the feeling in a space. The way in which a child feels joyful at a playground, I feel the obligation to create a space where an adult can feel the same emotion, but through alternative integrations – such as slides, relaxation areas, etc.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Sometimes I do not know why I do the things I do. In other words, why wake up and study hard and go to the gym? Why try balancing a work-social life? Why do I do anything? My motives and inspirations stem from the possibilities I know I have at my fingertips and now is the time to see which route I will go down, thus, giving each route a full effort and seeing where life takes me.

What attracted you to the 19six internship?
The ability to work directly with mentors and a team that was going to include me in projects and provide educational opportunities!

What led you to design?
It felt like a unique blend of my interest and strengths that had a creative and hands on side while also blending more math and practical aspects.

What aspect of design do you enjoy most?
I love that you get to do a little bit of everything! Right when you are getting bored or stuck with one way of looking at or working on a project there is a whole other way to go about it.

Where do you find your inspiration?
In the ability to create design and places that bring people together.

What attracted you to the 19six internship?
19six allows me to gain experience working in a friendly, smart, and creative environment. The opportunity for an internship here provides me the chance to learn the dynamics of the field, how to collaborate, and more insight into what I want to learn and do in the future.

What aspect of design do you enjoy most?
I love the freedom of design in its ability to connect and communicate with the people and communities interacting with the space. I love that design allows one to not only create efficient and effective ways to help people utilize and use the built environment, but also changes the way people approach and think about it, and by extension, the world.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration in observing architecture, or anything else, in a phenomenological stance. This allows me to understand how a building relates in the world, but also how it interacts and exists in its essence. I thin using this perspective allows me to gain inspiration by taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, which in turn provides me inspiration for details.

What is something you’re looking forward to in your future?
I am looking forward to building a more personal relationship with architecture and design. I look forward to doing this through research, internships, and exploration through my education.

Eric

San Luis Obispo Intern

Attending: Recently Finished at Cuesta College
Major: Architecture

What attracted you to the 19six internship?
The first thing that caught my attention was how long 19six had been in business and the vast experience they have with numerous projects and varying designs. Once I dug a little deeper, it was refreshing to see a company only require an associate’s degree as opposed to a full bachelor’s degree. Getting a chance to join a company with little experience was something I never expected to see.

What led you to design?
I’ve wanted to be an architect since I was in kindergarten playing with Lincoln Logs. While everyone else was playing with the newest video games or playing outside, I was building full houses and buildings. At my 5th grade graduation, they asked what you wanted to be when you grew up, I responded “I wanna be an architecture”. My friends made fun of me for that for years to come. Architecture is something that has stuck with me since the beginning.

What aspect of design do you enjoy most?
To be honest, I haven’t had much experience with the design aspect yet. I imagine the limitless creative options is what I’ll enjoy the most. When it came to design in classes, you’re limited by technology and knowledge, as I grow, I hope my creativeness grows as well. One of my favorite design tasks was a physical model recreation of Tadao Ando’s Koshino house in Japan. Getting hands-on to create a 3D model was a lot of fun, and turned out nicely.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Most of my design inspiration comes from a random spark of an idea that leads to something more down the road. When I sit down to start something, I usually like to do something random, or at least nothing specific but close to what the topic is. Once I have a base, I like to manipulate it to see what works or what doesn’t, if something turns out well, I keep going, or back to the beginning.

What is the most inspiring place you have visited to date?
This one is a tie; Rome, Italy and its amphitheater, seeing the ancient city’s ruins and getting a feel for what it might have been like back in the day. Getting a chance to see where my heritage started. The second is Tokyo, Japan and their historical architectural style. Their unique style that ties to their background and growth back to their ancestors. The way they design buildings based on their cultural,
their history, and their way of life.

Sydney

Roseville Intern

Attending: Baylor University
Major: Interior Design

What attracted you to the 19six internship?
What attracted me to 19six is the history the company has in this community and the value they put in their work. I also was drawn to the fact that they do all kinds of projects, from healthcare to education.

What led you to design?
I have always had artistic abilities, but when thinking about a profession I wanted to pursue, I believed it to be the best mix between my artistic abilities and my admiration for good architecture.

What aspect of design do you enjoy most?
What I enjoy most about design is getting to use my creative skills to make something that is meant to benefit the wellbeing and health of the occupants.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find my inspiration from nature when designing. I like to use sustainable and local materials when working on projects for school, and materials that can either resemble or represent the outdoors.

What is the most inspiring place you have visited to date?
The most inspiring place I have visited to date was Kauai. The lush and greenery of the island is applied and incorporated into a lot of the buildings, and you can tell that the island inspires their designs there.

Emily

Santa Cruz Intern

Attending: Cal Poly, SLO
Major: Architecture

What attracted you to the 19six internship?
When I was hunting for my first internship two summers ago, location was my only consideration: I wanted to be in Santa Cruz so I could spend the summer with my family. After that, I found myself returning so that I could continue to surround myself with amazing people, be a part of interesting projects, and gain experience through work I wouldn’t normally be assigned in other offices. 19six facilities an environment for their interns that allows them to learn and grow as aspiring professionals: this is ultimately why I find myself coming back year after year.

What led you to design?
If I’m being honest, it was the igloo customization feature in Club Penguin.

What aspect of design do you enjoy most?
I enjoy everything related to construction, assembling construction documents, rendering, interiors, furniture design, and sustainability.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Primarily nature: specifically the ocean. Although, spatial design and sustainable practices play their part in influencing my work as well.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
In the future, I plan to work on becoming licensed as soon as possible. Aside from that, I wouldn’t be opposed to looking into LEED certification, as well as designing some furniture/objects on the side.
