Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care’s 18-bed Serenity House is an inpatient hospice house that provides care for hospital patients whose needs cannot be met at home. Hidden on a hillside among Santa Barbara’s majestic coastal oaks, Serenity House was designed to be a place of comfort and dignity for palliative and end-of-life care patients and their families.
The facility’s private patient room design allows patients to be surrounded by loved ones throughout their time at Serenity House. In addition, patients and their families also take advantage of common areas such as the great room, meditation room, dining room, and outdoor patio. The design emphasizes serenity with a residential scale, taking advantage of key locations throughout the site and building for sacred spaces and memorials.
The 5.5 acre hilltop site provides the backdrop for a serene and sustainable design. The site enfolds the building with its sweeping slopes, gardens, oak trees, and nearly 360-degree views overlooking Santa Barbara.
